Understanding the user
Summary
I have had part time working experience at local florist. The experience does not only train my aesthetic vision, but I also gained business insight of the industry. From interviews with some of the customers, I found out that many customers are business owners. They are willing to spend extra money on flowers to decorate their workplace. However, they are often too busy to buy flowers in time for fresh arrangements at their workplace. From that, I have come up with 3 personas. One of the personas is presented, because it represents the users most.
Persona & User journey map

Problem statement
Jay is a restaurant manager who needs fresh flower arrangements sent to his store periodically, because his store needs to have fresh flowers all the time
Pain points
-
Customers can’t get flowers automatically and periodically
-
Sometimes flowers don’t fit the display area
-
Customers’ preferences aren’t always remembered
Competitive audit
I conducted competitive audit with three local florist online platforms. The purpose of this competitive audit is to identify important features and content, understand the user expectation and interaction, and get inspired with the creativity.

Low-fidelity design

Usability studies
I conducted two rounds of unmoderated usability studies online. Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.

Round 1 findings:
-
Users need different units to choose for measurement
-
Users also need to be able to show display area photos in other ways, such as take photos in the app
-
Users want to be able to pay cash when they pick up flowers
Round 2 findings:
-
The subscriptions adding process is very long, it’d be better to know how many steps there are left.
-
The confirmation page is too long to read.
High-fidelity design
After the analyzing the findings from the usability test, I iterated the prototype and turned it into hi-fi prototype.

Takeaways
Impact:
The app introduces a fresh flower subscription feature to cater to the demand of local businesses for a constant supply of fresh flowers in their workplaces. This new feature not only addresses user needs but also has the potential to boost order volumes, resulting in revenue growth for the platform.
What I learned:
While designing the Flower 1 app, I learned that the first ideas for the app are only the beginning of the process. Usability studies and peer feedback influenced each iteration of the app’s designs.
Next steps
-
Design the regular flower online shopping feature with user research and usability studies.
-
Conduct more user research to determine any new areas of need.
